12V wiring

I bought my son an '85 1009. Hard to judge the mileage because the speedo was inop, but in pretty good shape. The current problem is the starter. Been through two already. I have not yet done the doghead conversion. My question is more about the right wiring. The former owner did the 12v conversion, but there was an extra ground going from the frame right to the starter. I wouldn't start without it. Obviously not ideal.

Can anyone provide an explanation or picture of the proper wiring from the battery?

Do you want the stock 24v wiring diagram? Or a unknown 12v?

The only "approved" 12v conversion is the Rosscommon equipment company version. It is well documented and easy for us to help with.

Any other conversion is just as guessing game for us.

I'm not bothered by an extra ground to the starter from the frame. I'm concerned about the "wouldn't start without it". That says to me there's a ground missing somewhere else.

Right now its just one 12v battery with the pos lead running to the starter and the negative lead is connected to a bolt attached to the frame. Guess the real question should be how should the neg lead be routed? I'm not too familiar with this vehicle ..... yet.
