1980 Coleman Type MB-4 Aircraft Tug

ALLISON 4 speed automatic transmission. High first gear for towing and crash recovery. Allis Chalmers 433T turbocharged 4 cylinder engine 100HP. 4 wheel drive/4 wheel steering/ crabbing function with differential lock. Capable of moving 140.000LB aircraft on tarmac. Total weight 11,260lbs. with full fuel tank. It’s been a restoration project for over a year. Recent work done is fuel filter, oil filter, fresh AMSOIL 15W40 engine oil, red and white LED dome light, wiper blades, alternator, radiator hoses, replaced passenger side door with a new window regulator, both doors removed to replace window felts, adjust and grease tracking, sanded, cleaned and repainted the door interiors, reassembled door panels with new fasteners better than factory, Removed L/R fenders to inspect hydraulic lines and fittings (no leaks) but there was one chaffed line still not leaking. You may want to replaced that at some point. New fasteners for fenders. Fuel tank cleaned and inspected.

Interior cab work done. Remove seats and flooring, sand and repaint seat frames, grease seat tracking, remove all fiberglass insulation, sand almost the entire interior and repaint. Add rubberized armored personnel carrier insulation to the entire cab. Now has much improved sound barrier and insulation. No leaks from wheel cylinders, transmission and pinion seals. All drive train U-joints are in good condition. Looks like the transmission was replaced at some point. All glass good no cracks. What’s left to do: replace valve cover gasket, adjust injection pump to original specs. Had the local diesel truck repair shop look at it saying it runs good and they said that the injection pump was turned up for more horse power. Can have that done if you request that for a small up charge or you can do it yourself if your familiar with industrial diesel engines. I also managed to obtain a 49 page clean shop parts manual with illustrations. Tire size is 11:20 the same as the M939 series cargo truck. The tires have plenty of rubber but are weather checked. Last is a cosmetic repaint in the color of your choice.

Everything works, gauges, speedometer, wiper motor, blower motor and headlights. This is probably one of the more finer examples of a operational MB-4 tugs. It’s a very versatile and capable machine that can play other utilitarian roles like precision snow plowing in tight areas, off road vehicle recovery, pulling trees off roadways or pulling out stumps, wilderness placement of mobile homes where other equipment lacks those features. Bringing supplies to of road camp sites, search and rescue operations. If you detach the front pintle hitch and retaining brackets its more capable than most of your off road 4x4’s. Add a spot light and a winch and its virtually unstoppable with its tight turning radius, short wheelbase, 4 wheel drive with 4 wheel diff. lock and ground clearance. One final note: the heater and blower speed in the tug is suitable for the Antarctic conditions. You’ll be wearing a t-shirt in the cab when its zero outside. Please feel free to contact me with and questions and I’ll be glad to go over them with you.
