1986 Military Blazer start circuit problem

Hello all,

My son-in-law has an '86 diesel 24 volt blazer. The last time he started it, the
starter motor ran until he disconnected the batteries. Additionally, some small gage wireing melted its insulation. I tested the start circuit and found that the
start solenoid lead was energized even with the key "off". I need a circuit diagram of the start circuit and related wiring to locate the source of the problem. I could sure use some help on this.

Welcome to SS. I am new here also. You can try the TM's at the top of the page, RESOURCES. Try TM 9-2320-289-20. I think that's the right one, if not, someone will correct. There's alot of good folks here that know all about MV's.

Download the manuals for reference. Also the wiring diagrams are in the appendix.

Almost every question you will have has been asked and answered many times. The advanced search will become your best friend. Please don't hesitate to ask something that you can't find.

Read the TM 9-2320-289-10 Operators Manual to find out how a stock system should work. It is simular to the Operators Manual for Civilian vehicles. It tells you where all the lighs, switches, etc are located and what they do.

The starter Relay that stuck on your sons truck is a known issue. It started its life as a A/C relay and isn't strong enough for the stater system. The spring inside gets weak over time and can't hold the relays apart. One of the solutions is to install a heavyduty relay. One of our members posted the way he did it. It is refered to as the DOGEAD RELAY. Search and you will find it.

The wire that burnt is more than likely the fusable link for the ignition circuit.

Do not be affraid of the 24v system. It is just a stock 12v system that has been slightly modified to work in the military environment.
