24volt HMMVW engine swapped into 12volt 1983 Suburban 6.2

Hello, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to diesels in general.

A friend and I are about to attempt swapping out a 12 volt 6.2 diesel and putting in a 6.2 24 volt out of a HMMWV.

From everything I've read, the only difference in parts is the starter (24 volts, not 12) and of course the wiring and what not.

What all needs to be done to make this swap work?
6.2 24volt to 6.2 12volt....

Also, the Suburban (1983) the HMMWV engine is going into currently has AC, will the HMMWV engine work with the current AC setup?

One other thing... Kennedy diesel glow plugs or AC-60G's? - I'm currently leaning towards the 60G's...

I really appreciate all feedback!

I would convert the engine to 12v. It will be a lot less of a headache.

ETA: why are you swapping out?
That's the plan! Although I'm not 100% what all it entails... It doesn't appear to be very much though.

The flywheel appears to be slightly warped (bent crank shaft?) and its causing the starter solenoid to stick out when turning over.

The base engine itself could care less what voltage it is.

If the engine is from a M1009, the only item to change is the starter. The only other item to check is the fuel cutoff on the injector pump.

All the brackets, alternator and a/c will swap over with out an issue.

One thing to watch is if the engine is a HMMWV takeout. The IP cutoff will be 24v.

I have a 1987 diesel Burb that I am doing the same thing to.

After working on it today, we were able to get the old 6.2 out and do a side by side comparison of the two.

Your guys comments are great! thank you! Everything is making more sense now...

The 6.2 that is going IN IS a HMMWV takeout.

So the IP cutoff will be 24v on the HMMWV, not 12v?
How do I go about converting this to 12v?

Another thing we noticed....
The exhaust headers are different between the two.
The 12v 6.2 headers are pointed down and kind of tucked in under the heads on both sides.
The HMMWV headers kind of flare out at an angle. At this angle, will the headers fit in the engine bay and not cause a problem?

I could just swap headers to know that it will bolt right up to the existing exhaust pipes, however.... The headers on the HMMWV engine are much much cleaner.
Also, the front section of exhaust pipe needs to be replaced anyways, so as long as the HMMWV headers will fit in the engine bay, I might as well just do new exhaust that bolts right up to them.

One other thing, will the HMMWV oil pan fit over the cross member in the 83 burb?? It doesnt look like it will... Just a simple swap of the oil pans?
What is the best way to go about making this work?

Thanks guys! What a great resource!

The oil pan will be close but probably fit. 2" lift makes it all better. The HMMWV may have a different rear main design so that the the oil pans can't be switched. You will need to use the factory manifolds not the HMMWV ones. If the HMMWV engine had a serpentine belt, the water pump will need to be replaced as it's reverse rotation. You can also swap the tops of the injection pumps to switch electronics.

My mistake before, I wasn't thinking straight.
The engine I am putting in is a HMMWV Engine, not a CUCV engine....

What is the easiest/ best way to get 2 inches of lift? will add-a-leafs do it???

So the HMMWV exhaust manifolds will just not fit or??

Find an aftermarket company that offers lift kits for an '83 Burb.

HMMWV manifolds will physically bolt to the engine, but may not clear the inner fenders/frame rails of the Burb.

Don't forget to install the starter-to-engine-block bracket the is on back of starter -

Great! thanks!

Okay, so this is what I've gathered so far...

Headers need to be swapped - Easy swap - RTV or gaskets? What brand?

Oil filter needs to be changed from horizontal to vertical - Looks like it will be easy

24v Fuel shutoff solenoid swapped for 12v solenoid - easy swap it looks like

Oil pans!!! Will the civvy 6.2 oil pan bolt right on to the HMMWV block?

Water pumps... From what I've read the civvy 6.2 and HMMWV water pumps flow in the opposite direction(?) Kind of confused on this...

One last thing... It looks like I'll need to find a HMMWV Fan since it looks like the old one will not bolt onto the HMMWV fan clutch. Correct me if I'm wrong on this...

Thanks!
