5 ton axles ratio

Does anyone knows if u can change out the axle ratio on these axles. And if so where do I get a diffent ratio

Which way are you looking to go? More freeway friendly or lower gears for off road use? The 6.44's are pretty standard, there are some lower gears but they are very rare, something like 8 to 1 and 10 to 1 but you really wouldn't want to try to find 3 sets and swap them out if they are going into a 5 ton truck.

Have you considered going with bigger tires? That can get you 70mph or so.

I sure that would cheaper then change out the ratio. Do u know where I could get the front and rear and a t case for my project

They make a 9.34 and 10.26, ive seen the 9.34 chunks in old cranes, the 10.26 gears are rare, i think red barn customs have a few sets (probably better priced than others). The 10.26 gears came in the Honest John rocket launcher 5 ton truck. You said project so im guessing your building a mud truck, because i doubt your looking for a daily driver and great mpg's.

it is not going to be a mud truck. it will be a almost daily driver

Well after a little research, knowing that the 5t, top mounted double, reduction axle was a standard axle used in every day comercial heavy trucks, I found the ratios that was used plus the use of a inter-axle differential or a power divider (cannot be both at the same time because both use the front differential as the base), the inter axle and power divider can be used with ALL the ratios below. this means that if we can find the inter-axle or the power divider, no matter what the ratio is, it can be used with our 6.44s, just change to the 6.44 gearing.

The inter-axle and the power divider, along with most of the ratios are long out of use and most likley found in a OLD forgotten big truck junk yard because my research shows most show "out of production, not available"
