5 Ton Bridge Truck?!?

A buddy of mine sent me this to come and look at. I thought at first it was a 5 ton bridge or something...then maybe a 10 ton cargo but the front axle doesn't look right for a 10 ton or the bolt pattern. Also has the 20,000lb Garwood so that says 5 ton to me as well. Guy says it's something like a 1959- I'm not too familiar with bridge trucks aside from they're REALLY wide and this looks like that.

Alright folks, I know it's modified...but what is it?

THANKS!!!

It should be a M139 or M328, though I'm unable to tell you which, as I don't know the difference. Should have the Continental R6602 gas engine.

From the cell pics my buddy took I was like, "huh, bridge truck." Then, "holy crap the front axle is centered...is that friggin' 10 TON?!?!" Then, drat...5 ton front axle, hey that's a bridge truck! ...I'm pretty sure." :) Thanks guys! Hopefully I can check it out!

M139 is the chassis used to make that truck. The truck is an M328. A variation of the M139 chassis was also used for the Honest John Rocket Launcher but it had 10.26 to 1 gearing.

The 809 series truck with that bed was an M821. Really cool truck if you can afford the gasoline.

A scrapyard here had one of those..and I got the wheels off it. I wanted them on my wrecker, But they did not fit even as singles..They have really long studs and extra 2" spacers on the rears..very deep dish..and standard 1400x20s. and yes a bridge truck. If it had been complete I would have kept it all. I believe someone in wales has 5 of them..all in good condition.

IIRC...the wheels have a giant amount of back spacing plus a spacer between the rears. I called and left a message for the guy. I'll try again tomorrow.

Kenny, great info!

My buddy told me I NEED to check it out. We'll see if the guy is a gold dealer or not... :cookoo:

I don't believe there is a spacer in the rear between the duals.
From the triangle on the back and make shift rear gate I would say that they use it for silage or to haul cattle.
You will need big room for that find!

I have 100 acres and at the moment BIG trees to pull.

If I can get it, it may just end up for sale again as I've really been trying to consolidate trucks...

Talked to the guy last night that has it. Some people...he said a logging guy told him he'd lease it from him for $2500, put a Cummins in it ("...since it bolts right in..."), pull the bed, and put a 5th wheel plate on it for hauling logs out of the woods for a job he has... ...THEN give it back to the guy. The guy told me he was gonna wait on him because he'd get it back, didn't care if the gas engine was bolted in or not since it was just weight anyway. Then preceded to tell me about how it would get snipped and torn apart at the recyclers AND they'd pay him top dollar since it was "Army steel..." and that Army steel is different and pays more than regular steel. <--Retard. :cookoo: I made him a good offer but I think he's going to hold out to see if he can make money twice on it. We'll see...

We were pulling some small cottonwood trees with the winch on ours, then we decided to move the truck back instead of waiting on the winch. The truck would pull the trees with relative ease. The thing does like fuel though, lots of it...

I think the big R6602 got like 4mpg I think I've seen posted. Are the axles stock 5 ton width on those with spacers or what? Could a set of HEMTT wheels or 5 ton combats slap to have a width legal truck again?

At one time the axles were the same with spacers, later on the rears had fatter hubs/longer axles and spcerers on the front
