What is out there for my 5 ton to convert to singles and what is the largest tire I could run? Can the pump be turned up like my duece? What is the cruising speed of these trucks with the 1100 20's that are on it now. I had to tow it home and work on the fuel system so I haven't been able to drive it yet. If the pump can be turned up what is the exhaust temp I should stay below? I have never worked or driven one. I converting this into a camper and will travel long distances if possible. The Alaska roads are a perfecdt match for this truck but I heard it could use a little more power from the guy I bought it from. With my duece it took larger tires and rims , turning up the pump and the speed wasn't an issue anymore , but with this I'm starting over. Help!

1600's will fit OK. Might rub on a hard left turn. 1400's are easier to get along with, however.

The 5-tons are geared slightly faster than a duece as well. 6.44 vs. 6.722

If your truck has a miltifuel, the 1A motor is running just about at it's limit for longevity. Keep in mind it is just a 478 CI motor pulling around a 10-ton chunk of pig iron.

If it is an 800-series with the Cummins 250, a simple word on the turn-up: no. Adding a turbo is not a good idea either, as the piston cooling is not set up for it.

This brings up a point: In the M817 I looked at, the dataplate speed was 50 maximum, and the manual says 2100RPM on the engine. So given the same tires, which 5-ton is faster, the multifuel or the cummins?

Or is there more to it? I'm sort of looking for a no-restore beater 5-ton to bob and put the big rubber on and do a little mudding, but want to be able to cruise on the highway. Things are far apart in Texas.

A reference for different tire diameters from 9.00x20 to 16.00x20 or better would be useful.
