Did any of the 809 series truck ever go through a generational change (ie did any 809A2 trucks exist?)

Not that I know of. The M813A1 but that is just a M813 with drop side bed I think.

There have been a1's and a2's within the M809 series family. Specifically the 809 truck chassis and M809a1 tractor. M812 truck chassis and M812a1 Floating Bridge Transporter. M813 Cargo Truck and M813a1 Cargo Truck with drop-sides. M820 Expandable Van Truck and M820a2 Expandable Van Truck.

The closest would be from XM designation to M- designation as they shifted to full contract production, and then the A1 ISO-bed equipped trucks, but there were no major changes, as in powerplant or structural changes. Until the 939 series, that is.

The 800 series did not have a powerplant/transmission modernization with an accompanying A1-A2 suffix like the M35/900s did.

As others have pointed out, they began as XM, then went to M, and along the way the grille changed. Makers changed too.
Just to clarify, the A1, A2 suffix as on the G-742 series trucks really has nothing to do with generations of the truck chassis. For example, the M109A3 is powered by the Multifuel, whereas the M35A3 is powered by the Cat.
Rather the suffix denotes a variation from the base vehicle.
