A little quick help please/ Thermostat ?

Hi, heater wasn't working to well so i thought id try changing the thermostat.
When I got the housing off from where the top radiator hose goes I found no thermostat
in there.
Is this where the thermostat goes/;

Does the thermostat go in this way?;

Or this way?;

Also as you can see I have to hold it in place either way with the rubber around it, and the housing doesn't go flush with the rubber on it,
but without it, it seems to fit right in and everything is flush.
So no rubber on it like this?;

This is the Murray thermostat from oreillys.

Dont know, never changed one of these before.
Haven't changed any thermostat in about 10 years.
Then i just put in the same way the old one was.
Totally difirent vehicle.

first picture is correct, the temp stamp goes towards the block. thanks. mark if you choose no rubber gasket rtv will seal it . looks like that s what was there anyhow.

Oh boy here we go.

My mech. gloves are on loan.
I have somewhere to be right now and am trying to stay fairly clean.
I used the medical gloves cause they are free to us paramedics.

BTW your starter relay mod. is awesome. Been starting well even on cold mornings.
Changing the glow plugs next weekend and hopefully that will help too.
