All you alternator gurus'

I'm ready to replace my going bad alternator. It's number 1 that's going bad, as that light is lit, even though the 12volt is holding voltage thus far.
What I'm wondering is if a regular alternator can be used for that side as that one grounds to the engine block anyhow? Then I could get the bad alternator fixed and have a spare on hand.

then they have the wires switched in my blazer because when the charging light came and stayed on my blazer (#2) I replaced the driver side and the bearings were burnt out. and now it works fine.

And Mang is correct. #1 is the Driver side..

Dont know whats up with mine. but its working fine now

Yeah, you can replace that one with any large-frame GM alternator. Just make sure you get one that's 100A or better (I think there's a 108, 100, and a lower one) because when wired in series, the amperages will average in the circuit, you'll want to keep them about the same.
