Anyone Use Speedo Cable for Tach?

I talked to a parts dealer who told me he is selling speedometer cables and people are using them for the tach. It is about 1 foot longer and has the same ends. I've installed it and put a 360 degree loop under the dash to take up the slack. The loop is not very tight and I am going to reinstall the dash and try it. Has anyone else used a speedometer cable for the tach?
