backspacing of assembled wheel & tire

Installed some custom-built wheels on my M103A3 trailer and they've got quite a bit less backspacing than the stock wheels, so the wheels/tires stick out further. As I'm designing an enclosure for this trailer (turning it into a mobile workshop), I'm thinking about how much space I could gain by chopping up the wheelwells. But before I eliminate the unused inner portion of the wheelwells, would like to be able to use stock wheels and tires in a pinch. So what I'm wondering is... if you put a straightedge across the back of the tire, what's the distance to the wheel-mounting surface?
