In a CUCV, where they are charged separately, the charging will be ideal, but when in use coupled in series, they should be identical. Any difference in the internal resistance may produce a lower than 24 volt output to the starter.

No problems for now, one will end up undercharged and the other overcharged as battery current has to go through both. The current doesn't just go where its needed in batteries wired in series except as Bjorn said when you have 2 - 12V alternators charging each separately. You WILL wind up with at LEAST one bad battery before its time, be assured of that. A battery equalizer would take care of the problem but they cost more than buying many replacement batteries.
