best kind of batteries to use?

You would have to have one sure nuff dead battery to not light up the dash light, but if it was that far gone the answer is yes. Each alt dash light is isolated to its respective battery and alternator.

I used the Interstate 31P-MHD in the 2 M1009's I have had. Worked great during the 3 years I used them.

Last week my 6tl exploded at the gas station as I was starting up to leave. It sounded like someone tossed an M-80 under my truck. The top was ripped off and acid all over the place. Apparently the previous owner didn't get the memo about running a 6tl in series with a Group 31. Just picked up another Group 31 at battery bills and now it's running great. Buddy says I should wash the engine with baking soda diluted in water though.
