If you do buy one from an auction site don't assume anything, especially that because it came from a fire dept or county it was well taken care of. They usually sell them because it costs too much to fix it. Sometimes it gets butchered, because they don't know what they are doing and won't spend the money to do it right. Inspect it, you'll be happy you did.
Don't expect to find a winch truck cheap, they are getting hard to come by. The Air Force Deuce built in 87 & 88 is the best one made. Also get a truck with the dropside bed if you can. The Air Force deuces all came with it, but they rarely came with a winch. Good luck

That's the beast I'm after. Drop side with winch and a D motor and turbo.

Don’t fool around, go see a good vender that will make sure it’s a good running, titled and road worthy.
John Tennis and Kenny Kublo is a good start.

13ronin, An Air force deuce(87,88,89 years only) is the best truck to find. They are rare with a PTO winch, it could be added or add a stronger 18k electric. The poster above that has an LDS engine in his, has the ultimate deuce in my opinion. I would be interested to know what that would go for. A truck like that with 1100x20's, power steering, Mrap seats, the list goes on.... with some good money a crazy special deuce can be built.

EVENTUALLY... I'd like to make one a crew can but not bob, sound deaden the cab, disc brakes, make it a little more refined without taking away its raw ability or appeal.

Further if I had to give up the winch it wouldn't break my hear. Like you said there are aftermarket options. BUT... I would have to fab a new bumper or something. Want something almost deer proof during the rut. I work a lot of midnight and 12's 70+ miles from home.

Well here's a question... is there a guide out there somewhere that has all this info listed? Such as what years were air force, what are the specific differences between the engines, etc? You know the boring stuff most people dont want to take the time to read...
