brick walls

Spent the whole day trying to figure out why my light wiring isn't right, Turns out now the running and headlights quite also, and melted a fuse. The light switch went bad. Gonna be driving the Escort wagon to work.
On the plus side, the gauges work.

Hmmm... Sounds like a short in the wiring harness maybe? If so, that sux. Already replaced the wiring harness in my deuce. Wasn't too bad really, except for having to fabricate the entire rear harness from scratch since no one had one in stock at that time. Couldn't really imagine having to do it on a CUCV though... Good luck on your troubleshooting....

Forgot to mention, moved the GEN light wires and 4WD wire to the water temp and seatbelt light circuits, by changing their position in the plug that goes into the circuit board. I used the original plastic that was over each by trimming them and taping them to the other half of the ones where I put them. It seems to work and looks factory. Kinda slick if it works right. I wonder if the gen lights wont drain the batteries or not work right as I spliced them together and left the gen 2 relay wire where it was.

I hope their isn't any short, and that it's the light switch that caused all the ills. Yesterday it gave a big flash and out went the dash lights, only at the time I didn't know it was the switch that shorted.
At least if I have to take the dash out yet again, it'll give me a chance to loose all the crimp splices and solder and shrink tube the connections instead.

The light switch going bad is common. For some reason GM routed the power through the light switch and then down to the lights. Over time this leads to burnt out switches and the infamous dim headlights. There are relatively cheap fixes for this available commercially. They change it so the lights get the juice directly and the switch is just a switch.
