Building Jumper Cable for MEP-831A - NATO Slave O-Rings

Hi - I picked up a pair of NATO Slave connectors and 10 feet of 2/0 wire to build a better battery jumper for my MEP-831A. There are O-Rings that came with the connectors when I opened them up. Anybody know if these are supposed to just slide over the lugs before tightening them down or exactly how they are used? One side had them tightened down under the 3/8 lug bolt and they were loose floating around on the other side.
