Busted Cam Shaft

Yesterday I drug another Deuce into the driveway. It has been sitting in a guys yard for a year and a half with a busted cam shaft. He disassembled most of the motor with the intent to scrap it and put a Cummins in the truck. He ran out of funds though so I am going to replace the Cam and put the truck back together for him. I'll take a bunch of pictures along the way in the hopes it will help someone in the future fix their Deuce. My payment for fixing his deuce is a Ford cab over with a Cat diesel V8, automatic trans, with a 4 speed aux gear box and 2 speed tandems with detroit lockers in them. It was a Navy street sweeper. I don't get the street sweeper box but that's ok. It only has 36,000 miles on it.

Today I got the spare motor broke down and discovered that the head gaskets had been leaking for a long time and all the cylinders except the #1 were rusted and pitted. But the Cam was good. I got it out and installed in the motor in the Deuce. All the accessories except the air compressor are back on. Now I need to get the head gaskets, intake and exhaust gaskets, radiator hoses, oil and fuel filters all on order and finish putting it back together. Setting the timing was pretty easy. I lined up the marks just like the TM said to and then timed the fuel pump after the cam and crank were done. Pretty simple thing to do. Tomorrow I will start a thorough PM, grease all joints, drain the diffs, trans, and T-case. Then fill them all back up. Etc.

So I have hit a brick wall with this engine. Well more like a Steel Wall. The engine rotates freely with a socket on the bolt on the front of the crank. Put the heads on and try to rotate it, It rotates until the piston comes up in the #5 cyl. It hits the head. So now I have either a stretched connecting rod or a crank that is out of round. The history of the engine is that the cam busted while driving at 55 MPH or so. It's been sitting for about 2 years since the owner said it happened. It's pouring rain now so tomorrow I will get into the tear down of the motor to see what it wrong. Now here is the question. Would y'all rebuild the whole motor or just get a running take out? I am not sure which way I would go if it was my money and my truck so I am letting the owner decide. But I'd like to hear some opinions so I can pass them on.

Was it hitting with no valvetrain assembled?

Do you have the cam timed incorrectly, and have a valve hitting a piston?

Can you pull(loosen) all the pushrods and try cranking it over?

All of the valve train is as loose as the adjustment bolts will let them be. I found the problem while turning over the motor by hand to set the #1 cyl intake valve at wide open. So I could adjust the valve tolerances from scratch. It will turn over without the heads on it. I never checked to see if the pistons were coming over the deck height though. I will from now on though.

Sounds like a BENT a valve, when the cam broke, a valve was full open, piston hit it, bending it, freezing it in the head, now when you turn it over, the piston hits it,. I would pull the offending head AND check the offending piston and rod.

I have another thread under the conversations tab covering my plans with the Ford Can Over. I am going to build a 16 ft flat bed with a 4ft dove tail. I also plan on making it a dump bed.

i also put my money on a valve problem, but maybe not bent. i would go for mangled, if i recall there in no angle to the valves.

It had a lifter canted in the bore causing the #5 intake valve to be stuck open. I used a small emery cloth roll and a long piece of all thread. Cleaned the lifter bore just a bit. The lifter moves smoothly now. The was some rust in that lifter bore causing it to hang up. Glad it's fixed now. I should have the motor put back together this weekend.

After a very long delay and a few issues the motor is now running. I put it all together and fired it up for all of 10 minutes. It poured smoke out the exhaust. So I pulled the injectors and sprayed a bunch of PB Blaster down each cylinder. I figured It had a stuck ring on one of the cylinders. Put it all back together and after a few seconds of running the smoke stopped. It's time to give this truck back. Finally. Thanks for the advice and the help with parts.
