Buying From GL?

I've been looking at this site, it seems kinda sketchy to me.

A.) You can't drive the truck before you may buy?
B.) You can't look at it in person?
C.) There is literally no description, how do you know what your buying?

Just some things I'm worried about...thanks for any help clearing this up for me. Right now, it kinda seems like a gamble to buy from them.

I'd buy from Gorgeous Ladies, but that's just me.

In all seriousness, answers to your questions:

1. No, you can't drive the truck, although a couple folks here were lucky enough to get the chance to, but that's a rarity. You may or may not get a chance to even run the trucks before you bid.

2. Yes, you can look at them in person. What you see is what you get. If you are not familiar with what to look for, go with someone who has.

3. INSPECT INSPECT INSPECT. If you blind bid, and get a truck with a cracked block, oh well. If you can't get a chance to see what you are bidding on, DON'T BID. Just my two cents.

I have bought 8 trucks from GL. All I test-ran before bidding, all were inspected prior to bidding, and all were either driven home, or towed behind a driven one, by me.

A.) Nope.
B.) You can go and preview lots though.
C.) Trust your instincts, and hope you get lucky. :p

A) No, you can't. If it starts, you can start it and put it in gear to see if it engages, but you are not allowed to drive the vehicle.

B) Yes, you can. They encourage you to inspect the property before bidding. The instructions to get on base are listed in each auction.

C) Inspect the property in person.

And you are correct, it is a gamble to buy from them. I bought two residue (stripped out for salvage) 1009s from Ft Carson. One had a good powertrain but the axles were stripped. The interior was gutted too. The other has a blown motor and the transfer case is blown apart so I assume that the engine seized while it was driving down the road.

Caveat Emptor when dealing with GL.

Another good source for CUCVs is from the Forest Service Fire programs, they sell through GSA Auctions
GSA Auctions®, General Services Administration, Government Site for Auctions

That is why everyone wants top dollar for a running titled truck. If you buy enough of them from GL you will eventually get burned on one. People need to recover the money lost on the bad trucks. I buy sight unseen and roll the dice. I can't preview everything like the guys who live 5 minutes from GL lots.

Hey I can't complain. Did good on mine but when and looked it over. They did let me charge batteries to get it started...take a can of ether...most glowplugs systems are shot or at least one part of them...As the old saying goes don't buy a pig in a poke

A lot depends on which site you buy from. Some sites are unmanned and it is hard to schedule an inspection.
GL keeps the minimum number of employees at most sites...even a manned site can have issues scheduling inspections. The GL guys have to load, unload, sort, classify and take pics of items coming up for bid.
Some sites will assist you and try to slave off a vehicle with dead batteries.....it depends on how busy they are.
Buying from GL is a crap shoot but you can get some dam good buys....I have bought deuces for as low as 700 bucks and drove them home. Out of all the trucks I bought only one had a bad engine.....the rest only needed minor work to get them in road worthy condition.

Bottom line......ya pays your money and takes your chances.

But if you get the short shaft you can part out save parts that are common failures and sell the rest to others on here what we don't buy trade or barter you can sell for scrap...but dont sell good part that way please

I buy sight unseen also. It's kind of a rush to spend X amount of dollars on something you've only seen in pics. So far I'm batting a 100. picked one up at gl in penn and drove it back to nc with no problems. Picked up another deuce at ft Jackson and drove it home no problems. Just roll the dice and no matter what keep smiling.

My 2 cents, bid worst case senerio like I did on my rusty Michigan NG unit. Bid what you are willing to spend and if you lose you lose no big deal there will be more. Jumped it with the forklift and drove it on the trailer. Only need batteries and glow plugs. I have now driven it 100 miles and its running good, total miles showing when I got it were 73666. Only took 4 months for paper work to clear and arrange time to pick up. :deadhorse:

I look at it like this.....if I dropped 2500 bucks at a casino and lost I would have nothing to show for it, if I put 200 bucks down some pole dancers G-string I'd have nothing to show (well nothing I would want to show)........if I drop a few grand at GL I have a reasonable chance of having something worthwile to show for it........as a matter of fact if you check my back yard the proof is there.
