Can they scrap or trash part of your "winnings" for you?

Sorry for the silly question but...What if I win an auction for a crate of stuff and I only want part of it? If it is scrap metal do they want any of it or is there a scrap pile there or anything? As you know some of these parts pallets are loaded with metal brackets etc. that have no value.

well @Blownaway I'm not sure which auction this is but in the first place you should read the bidding rules as it likely would mention something there. I know at least one non-military auction had the wording to effect of "must be cleared within xxx days, anything yet left behind will be charged to the bidder at xxx per day till it has been all removed" just to show what I meant

They won't check it off as picked up until it's all gone. If they perceive it of value then you'll be charged a default fee and it relisted. If the site POC is nice he may throw it in another lot, dumpster, or someone's truck with your permission. All in all they just want to check the box so the computer is happy and the metrics look good.

i always took everything extra in a lot , some of it came in handy..

However, back when i had a 60's-era commercial D7 w/o winch, a period army D7 winch "in crate" popped up on a DRMO listing.. I bid on it and won (sealed bids at the time)

When they forklifted the crate out to my truck i held them off and took the cover off to inspect the winch .. The winch mount area was inaccessible, jammed against one side of the crate. I had tools, to only discover the winch housing was busted along the mounting flanges

They weren't too happy when i refused the item .. The initial auction notification made no mention of it being busted or scrap, the paperwork indicated it was a serviceable operational piece.. I went over to building such & such and argued this point with the head honcho and got a refund. 10 hours out of my day plus gas and wear/tear, i went home mad and empty-handed . .Was not penalized for the refusal

On the flip side of that, decades later at the end of Gov't Liquidation's reign, I ran into the same type of situation where a Lot of several fuel tanks were listed as serviceable and looked fine per the pics .. An acquaintance was there picking up stuff from a previous auction and he knew i was interested in the tanks and went over to look.. He sent me pics of the undersides, pitted on the bottom, some showed signs of weeping .. He said they "looked" good elsewhere but were junk on the bottom

GL wouldn't let me cancel the bid and i was the only bidder .. I gave GL's HQ in arizona a call about the tanks being advertised as Serviceable but weeping thru pits on the bottom, and i had pics of such.. I refused to pay and thusly was "banned" from GL .. Good riddance ! .. I previously had an incident where a ladder was pictured inside the van body of an auctioned M109A3 i won, and the ladder "disappeared" when i went to pick it up.. The GL "worker" took my 40 bucks and magically the ladder reappeared from behind his little building .. Other items that often "disappeared" from many of the trucks during the GL days were tow shackles & pins ..

@msgjd sometimes some people just don't know any better and unfortunate they don't quite help our reputations that way otherwise (regarding working winch or usable tanks)

on the other hand there are these kind of people that refuse to sell something without having 'really gone over it with a comb themselves' and these are the sort of people you don't want to back out of with! one non-military example of this I recall was regarding buying a trabant/warburg (I forgot which two it was but thats not the point now tho) long-distance without seeing it first and the owner told him about literally everything including a small rust spot that would had been only visible if the battery had been completely removed - needless the car did indeed get moved right on the spot
