CDL requirements and info for Georgia drivers

Afternoon everyone, I will be purchasing a M923a2 come Saturday and I was wondering is it legal to own and drive one on a NON-CDL license in Georgia.

I want to know What did you go through, how much did it cost you, etc

I've heard mixed results, some say a non-commercial class B CDL is required

Others have said that a simple class C regular license is adequate. The truck would strictly be used for occasional driving on the road, parades and off-roading; no heavy hauling or profitable uses.

The Non-Commercial Class B has been changed to the Non-Commercial Class E and is the way to go for unrestricted driving. Hauling heavy or pulling a trailer can be done under the Class E if you decide you want to. Only restriction is making money with it. The picture below shows the information on the back of my license. Don't mind the dirty hands. I just changed the powersteering line on my truck.

To go from a Class C to a Class E only involved a 20 question multiple choice knowledge test, 3 forms of ID and a new picture. No driving test required. Took all of about 30 minutes to get done.

Where are you in GA?

Moving up rather quickly Eli! I run a Class C but will look into the Class E. I run weighted plates and Commercial Insurance, I always thought Class C was fine unless I was actually doing Commercial Hauling. I'm sure I can pass the 20 question test as I had Class A at one time. Very Informative and good burn Swamp Donkey!!!

Man that is a nice class of license to have available. NYS is awful. There is something similar but its for farm/ag use only. Nothing better than having options!

Swampy how did you study for the test?

I keep getting referred to the commercial license manual? This is from 2016 and does not reference the Class E license.

I didn't study anything. Robert lead the way on this and I followed a couple months later. I just walked in, stated I wanted a Class E, provided my forms of ID and the fee, took the test, had my picture taken and a temporary license was handed to me. The real one came in the mail a week later.

The test itself is simple. An example question on mine was:

When traveling down a hill, what is the proper way to control speed?
a. Normal braking
b. Engine braking
c. Use your feet (or some other random answer)
d. None of the above

I specifically remember this question because this exact question was on my test twice! So really I only had to answer 19 questions, haha.

Seriously, if you know anything about big trucks you'll do fine. I think you can miss 5 questions and still pass. I didn't miss any and didn't have to guess at any of them. They were all basically common sense questions.

There is not an air brake endorsement for this license because it's included already. This license is not for you if you make money with your truck. That's the only restriction. It's perfect for what the majority of us do and want though...unrestricted driving. You can pay a little more and have the license valid for 7 years, I think it was.

Joseph, for comparison I have:
Class E non-commercial license
Private weighted tag to cover full GVWR ($180/year)
Registered at full GVWR
Insured through Progressive Commercial for full GVWR on a non-commercial policy with unlimited travel distance ($254/year)
Ironclad paperwork and credentials for $434/year...priceless!

Robert did a thread when he got his a while back. He did some good work sorting all this out.

I need to add that there also is an affidavit you must print and complete from the DDS website that needs to be turned in. I seem to remember it having to be notorized. From the DDS website:

Class E(formerly Non-Commercial Class A)**

Truck trailer or tractor-semi trailer combination in which the combination weight exceeds 26,001 pounds and the unit being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.

Applicants for a Driver’s License in Classes E or F (non-commercial) must submit a Form DDS-36 (Affidavit showing minimum driving experience of 3 months and/or 3,000 miles in type of vehicle for class of driver’s license being applied for.)
The form allows you to self certify your time so don't get worked up about it. Just forgot to mention it earlier but it will be required when you go.
