Changed glow plugs today

New set of glow plugs arrived yesterday and i went ahead and put them in today. 6 of the old ones came out with no issues, one of the old ones was swollen and the tip would not come out ( i had to break it off), the last one sheared by itself leaving the tip stuck (conveniently this was the one behind the alternator, ugh).

I removed the injectors on both trouble cylinders, and placed some masking tape over the opening to what i assume was the cylinder. I was able to push the swollen tip all the way into the pre chamber with a piece of coat hanger wire and then extract it with a magnetic tool. Pretty straight forward.

The last cylinder had the sheared tip stuck in place in the glow plug hole. I tried grabbing it from inside the pre chamber with needle nose but it would not budge. I tried pushing it in from the outside with a rod and no luck that way either. In the end my friend had an idea to cut down an old glow plug (cut off most of the heat element leaving about 3mm of it past the threads) and thread it into the glow plug opening, and use that glow plug to push the seized tip into the pre chamber 3mm more than it was. Then we cut down another glow plug leaving a bit more of the heating element (about 6mm), and threaded that one into the hole, this unseized the old tip and allowed us to push it all the way into the pre chamber, where we fished it out by magnet. Used some PB blaster along the way too.

I was able to swing the alternator far enough out of the way by loosening the adjusting bolt and removing belts, then rotating toward the side.

I also found a 30mm deep well axle socket that fits the injectors perfectly.

Do you guys use any anti-sieze on the injector or glow plugs when reassembling? Do I need to purge air from fuel lines now or will it work itself out since the other 6 injectors were untouched?

Thanks.

Some good ideas there, glad you acomplished the task. Our F350 was nightmare, and ended up with the heads coming off. We re-fit then nice clean and dry.

I use some anti seize on the threads. Reasemble injectors and it should start, run rough for a bit then it should idle as before.

Thanks. I haven't started her up yet or reconnected the batteries, I have my old PCB removed and am installing an S3 ESSS this week. I'm excited to get it installed and have her starting like normal again. I ohmed out the old glow plugs and they were all shot, pretty sure my bad PCB took them out.

That's a great idea, it'll give me something to do until the ESSS shows up. I've cleaned up all the old grounds but adding a ground harness will help protect the investment in parts I just bought.

how rough are we talking? i have a tapping sound now.

i feel very certain i got all of the broken glow plug out and none fell into the cylinder. i've only let it run a few seconds.
