Couple of Fire Dept HMMWV pics

Here's a couple of pics of a HMMWV that the VFD I'm on used to have. There were two of them, identical on the outside except the number and the one that was used as a grass truck had a vinyl cover instead of the hatch in the back. The one in the pic was used as a first responder vehicle, and also to tranport manpower to a scene. At least once, it was used to transport hospital workers to the hospital during a very bad snowstorm. It carried a stokes basket and medical equipment.
The other HMMWV had a 150 gallon pressurized tank and grass fire equipment. The tank was pressurized by a SCBA bottle regulated down to about 100 psi. The gunners hatch could be used to spray fires while on the go. This setup was built by the members.
Both trucks have 2 strobes on all the corners, on the front they are just outboard of the head lights. There are also 2 section strobes inside both sides of the windshield at the top.
They were finally replaced (along with a late 70's GMC pickup) for a new custom build grass truck. The HMMWV's, despite regular maintenance had proved too unreliable due to constant electrical problems. Also of concern were the limited visibility, crew safety due to no shoulder belts, tight crewspace, and the possiblity of injury in a crash due to the design of the interior of the vehicle. The trucks were a source of pride for the dept. for many years as both of the trucks were purchased, painted and outfitted for under 25K for the both of them. In contrast, another dept. in the county had a custom built HMMWV that cost around 140K.

Yes, more pics of the old truck, especially the Barton 500 GPM front mounted pump. I have one of those pumps on my apparatus, a 1954 Willys Howe Fire Jeep.

Coincindentally, that's a '54 Dodge model R. It has a V-8 Hemi engine (forget the CID) and 7,500 ORIGINAL miles. Still pumps great, last used on a run in the early nineties I believe. It's not the fastest thing of the line, but it will do 65 on the freeway. Kinda feels weird driving that with no seatbelts! I repainted the diamond plate when I first got on the dept. and took it to a fire truck muster, had a great time. It's the original truck for the dept. I'll have to wait 'till I get back in the states to get better pics of the pump, email me in about a month.

As for the HMMWV's, they were returned to the Govt. (DRMO?) so I don't know where they went.

Here's a link to better pics of all the trucks. The GMC pickup, and the IH Air Supply trucks are gone. We have a new grass truck and a new Pierce Rescue built on the same cab and chassis as the Pierce engine. The website hasn't been updated for a while, gotta fix that when I get back.
