Does anyone know how many different styles of "Air-Wiper" motors where used on the Deuce ? My older Deuces have totally rebuildable units, and I have heard about the "plastic" housings on the later models, but I have never seen or heard anything about this style. My 1988 Air-Force Deuce's wiper motors wouldn't work, so I replaced them with ones I had rebuilt from one of my older deuces. Today I had some free time so I took one apart and found it is totally different. As you can see in pictures #1 and #4 the end control unit is totally redesigned. The sector gear in picture #2 is held in place with a "roll pin" instead of a machined screw and the manual rod is pressed on as far as I can tell, picture #5 . The unit also uses a four part seal assembly as seen in picture # 3 . This is far superior then the rawhide seal used in the older units, which is funny since the rest of the unit is built being "non-serviceable" unlike the older units. Does anyone know when this style of wiper motor came into service ?

Well after totally disassembling the air motor I found several differences between this style and the older ones. The piston (rack) assembly is different ( pictures #2 and #5) . The "rocker" gear is pinned instead of screwed together (picture #3) . The seals are different (picture #4) . The newer one does not have the recess for a 'O' ring like the older ones ( picture #6) , and the last and major difference is the "valving" assembly. The old style used two valves to shift the air direction (picture #8 ) . The newer style uses just one valve and it has a Teflon seal instead of 'O' rings ( picture #7) . The newer style also uses a pressed in pipe for the air inlet ( picture #10) . I removed this pipe and drilled out the hole for a 1/8"NPT fitting (picture #9) . I will also be replacing the rocker gear with the older design and using a new "stainless steel" shaft that "Peashooter" made for me (picture #1 ) . I would recommend anyone who is planning to rebuild their wiper air-motors buy one from Peashooter. I have rebuilt eight of these motors now and everyone had a rusted shaft. Some so bad I had to throw them away.
If anyone else has one of these "hybrid" units I would rebuild it using a combination of a older design and this newer one. The valving is far superior as is the rubber seals. Though in all honesty the old "rawhide" seals work well and with just a little silicone or PTFE spray can come back to life.
