Did I Make a Mistake Buying This M1097R1 Humvee? $10.5k, No Title, Need Advice

So… this has been a bit of an impulse buy. My dad and I have always loved military history, and while we admittedly know nothing about Humvees, we kind of fell in love with this one when we stumbled upon it.

The guy selling it was super nice and very upfront. It was originally listed at $14k, but we talked him down to $10,500. We told him we wanted to confirm the title situation before fully committing. The truck itself is very clean with no damage or rust. It starts right up and has new tires. Comes with a few upgrades such as LED headlights and light bar, backup camera with Android Auto/Apple Car Play with a place to plug in accessories and phone chargers. Batteries are new too!

That’s the big catch: no title. Just a bill of sale from the previous owner, who claimed it had a title but ghosted after being pressed on it. The current owner never followed through on titling it and doesn’t know how. I now know it originally came from GovPlanet (bought out of STL), but the SF-97 is missing. It does have insurance, strangely enough, and a 17 digit VIN was listed (may have been generated for insurance purposes).

It’s likely an early ‘90s model M1097R1 with the 3-speed, 6.5 NA diesel, no A/C. After doing a ton of research post-offer, I’m a little bummed about the 3-speed since we hoped to drive it occasionally on the highway. But realistically, it’s going to be a low-mileage, lake cruiser. Maybe 1 or 2 miles per trip, a few times a month at most. Stored under a cover or in a garage if we move it.

Plans are to keep it mostly stock, clean, and definitely add safe rear seating for the kids. Top off, cruise to the marina, maybe enter some car shows. I used to do car mods and my own maintenance, but now with kids and work, I don’t have much wrenching time. My dad is retiring soon and may handle maintenance. Still, I’m a little concerned about the rumored upkeep headaches.

Curious to hear your thoughts Is this a fair price in today’s market? Would it be possible to get our money back or even make a little if we sell it later? Is the title situation a dealbreaker or manageable with a bonded title or historic vehicle route in Missouri?

Thanks in advance, looking for some sanity checks here.

Having experience with the Florida DMV, and getting a Vermont tag instead, I believe that if you do not have any luck with Missouri, Vermont should issue you a tag. For vehicles of that age, the registration is what is used to sell them - no titles. And I believe Vermont will accept a bill of sale as proof of ownership. Easy to do with all the forms needed on the internet. Takes about a month or two.

BTW - I think you did very well on the price.

I'd try to identify a date on some other part of the vehicle. For example the transfer case, engine, transmission, differential etc. The regulator on the alternator usually has a date code. Use that to date the year of manufacture so that you aren't just making up a number. Many states don't require a title if is a certain age or before a certain year. Here I had a title and my state didn't even want to see it, just a bill of sale.

Looks like Vermont shut that loop hole down but there's another workaround using a Montana LLC. Thanks for the input on the price, thats a big thing I'm curious about as I don't have any experience with these trucks.

There are a lot of things that drive the price IMO. Engine and transmission are a major consideration and make a big difference on intended use. With the 3 speed you are limited IMO to around town or local off road use. With the 4 speed it is a lot more road friendly but still not good for highway IMO. I think you paid a reasonable price if it does what you are looking for.
