Diff leak, is this correct part number

Did my due diligence. I can't even find the right TM to look through, but maybe Beerslayer can help me on this as he posted some seal numbers, but I'm not sure they are the same part.

First, the leak. The entire undercarriage looked like someone tied an open 5-gal bucket of fluid to the drivetrain successfully, . Went to car wash and washed out the entire mess and drove 10 yards and crawled under there, until I saw this.



This is the back of the forward, rear axle diff, where the drive shaft comes out, its leaking.

I looked around and found this. At the bottom of the page, last post, on page two, beerslayer posted about some seals. Are these the same seals? Or does someone else have a correct part number on this? I'm sure it's probably a common occurance. Is it a particularly difficult fix? Looks like it could possibly be an easy job ... or possibly not.

Pinion seal replacement is detailed in WP 418 of the 23-3 TM. Take note of the thread I linked above when using the TM procedure though.

How many of these are on the truck? 3? 5? Are they redundant and anywhere a shaft comes out of something? Just trying to get a feel for the number of places they are on the truck.

Is this a pretty common failure? Is it a good idea to keep some in ones long range travel kit?

I guess you could say that about every hose and belt and seal. But somewhere you have to draw the line. Thanks Swamp Donkey.

There are 2 on each axle for a total of 6, then there is one on each T-case shaft for a total of 3. So 9 total on the truck and yes it's a common failure as far as seals go. You need to pull your axle vents and make sure they're not plugged though. Replacing the seal might not remedy the leak as the pressure will just find the weakest seal next if your vents aren't workin properly.

Well, that might explain the sudden start and unexplained stop of the leak. I looked at it today, and there isn't much sign of a leak. I paid you for 3 seals, so I'll probably replace this one anyway. This way I know what I'm in for if I have to do it again in Death Valley or someplace.

BEFORE you do the seals, check your axle vents, a stuck vent WILL cause that.

All the axle input,output. Transfer case input,output and Allison output are the same seal.

Another piece of the puzzle. When I noticed this, I decided it was a good time to check my transmission fluid level. I could not get an accurate reading no matter how many times I tried. It would be so high up on the stick the reading couldn't be right. every time I tried, it was off, a lot.
