Are electric brake controllers proportional?

There was a post a couple of days ago about using a relay tied to the brake light switch to control the electric brakes.

Is it necessary to use a proportional controller or is the relay ok?

Is there any issues with the brakes being on or off?

Proportional is much better to adjust for you different load conditions .Like with a empty load you dont want to drag your trailer tires. And if you have a heavy load you dont want the trailer to push you down the road.

All of the ones I"ve seen are proportional. They have a little pendulum in them so if you're stopping faster, it will know to apply trailer brakes harder

:ditto: If you wire a relay from the brake light circuit straight to the electric brakes it will apply the full 12V causing the brakes to lock up.
