Excessive Engine Chatter just started

Hi All, Need some suggestions here. My M1009 64K miles on it just started having excessive chattering happening. Now, I know all diesels chatter, however we all know what our vehicles sound like running down the road and can pick out noises that should not be there. and this chatter is new and should not be there. Let me explain as best I can and let you know, new glow plugs, fuel filter, GP sol st85 and all new belts, new card truck is tight and everything else is working fine as it should and all fluids are good, clean and proper color: here goes... Started truck yesterday, drove to work 12 miles no issues; got in it to run to meeting 15 miles away at noon and as I was pulling out and applying gas peddle I heard excessive, not very loud but very pronounced excessive chattering, that seemed to happen as gas peddle was pushed to allow the vehicle to move. As I let up on peddle and as I drove it seemed to quite down but as more peddle was used to keep truck up to desired speed, you could hear the excessive chatter. I stopped checked oil, all is good, no diesel smell, level good and otherwise everything seems fine truck idles as normal (noise is normal at idle). After my meeting drove back to office; no issues all was normal and no excessive chattering. After work as I was driving home, it started again. trans fluid and shifting is fine as well. Just excessively amount of distinct chattering. Any ideas? I am going to take truck to local/reputable diesel shop but would like to know what you think first.

First place to look is at the harmonic balancer. Check the rubber between the inner and out rig. It should not be cracked, bulging or missing. You may need to crawl under the truck and look from the backside.

Thanks Warthog, ok, just checked, all is good and timing mark is lined up. Maybe timing is that what your thinking? CDR valve maybe? Im not very mechanically inclined. CDR is the only thing I have not replaced. as an fyi, I have all new rubber, vacuum lines and have no excessive smoke or smells either just excessive valve chatter.

CPF, Bracket is fine, belts are good. this is very pronounced excessive valve chatter in the engine that seems to be coming and going. almost everything is new and functioning properly, all gauges, fluids and belts are new and tight. No smells, smoke or other, just seems to have this annoying chattering like all the rods are knocking/valves are chattering very pronounced at all speeds when power is applied. oil pump, maybe???Truck still has normal power and is not underpowered and Im not very mechanically inclined and I don't want a diesel shop to tell me its this and that and charging me for unnecessary things and am hoping I can pin-point the problem and I tell them to look at XYZ for me.

Kind of reminds me of when the cold start circuit is working first thing in the morning. The cold start circuit advances timing as well as ups the idle RPM. I wonder if it could have shorted or stuck in on position some how. Just a guess, but you could see if unplugging the light green wire from the IP helps.

Maybe a sticky injector?

Are you using fuel additive?

Dependable, 10-4, I will for sure check it out. The truck does the fast idle and then settles down after a few minutes as usual in the am but it may be an intermittent issue so I will check it. yesterday, the glow plug, wait light, didn't come on because the truck was still warm when I started it and I cant remember if cold start circuit engaged. It was 60 degrees here yesterday. Thanks

I don't think this is it, but check the throttle cable. It may be vibrating against the air cleaner. I had one that drove me crazy trying to find the noise. Also check the wing nuts.

Have you messed with the injector line any, some time if there bent they can make it sound like a lifter knocking. I had 2 trucks that did that. That or what Doghead said a sticky injector.

What is the frequency of the clatter? Is it tied to RPM? Is the frequency once per fire, once every other fire, once every revolution, etc.?

My first go-to with things described as valve clatter is to check out the valves. Over the years I've had everything from valves that needed adjusting (pushrods with solid lifters) to washers splitting and causing a whole rocker arm to be off torque spec. I don't know if these engines will allow them to be run without the valve covers on (don't have one yet, as you know), but if you can do that it's usually pretty enlightening at the very least.

Guys- I checked everything mentioned above and found nothing. It is happening under, for lack of a better term, Drivetrain engagement and it just started within the last 4 times Ive driven it, within the last 4 times its happened twice. When I put pressure on gas peddle to engage drivetrain to keep it up to speed it just chatters like crazy. Normally it just has a steady hum/sewing machine sound within the cabin. But this is that really loud chatter that you hear when your driving under 20mph, (you can hear the diesel chatter pretty pronounced at that speed but then as you get up to speed the engine noise settles down) and its a steady hum. Well I'm hearing the loud chatter inside the cabin at cruising speed and its very loud and excessive. Hard to explain, I know. I took it to diesel shop this morning and they are going to check it out and replace fluids and do the front brakes and said they would dyno it and see what they could find. Ill let you know what they come up with. They didn't know when I explained it to them.

Check your transmission to engine bolts, you'll need a long extentsion or several together. Check your motor mounts. Check to see if your flywheel is rubbing the aluminum cover. While your there check to make sure the flywheel is tight. Can you hear the noise at idle in park? If not I would lean towards something like what I metioned above. Put the truck in gear and give it a little throttle with your left foot on the brake to see if the noise becomes more noticable.
