This past weekend we took our Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road and 1986 AM General M998 HMMWV to Cape Lookout National Seashore on the outer banks of NC to camp in a cabin and drive on the sand. She just got a brand new rear differential installed, so this was the maiden voyage for it.
Beautiful weather on the way down, so we rolled sans doors. It is about 1 3/4 hrs from our house to the ferry.
It was us and another family (both parents were in the Army), for a total of seven (7) with kids, plus our dog Izzy.
I had fashioned a rumble seat for the bed of the HMMWV that secures through the fenders via grade 8 bolt drilled for a tractor pin to go through, so it is both secure and quick release.
All seven (7) plus the dog rolled all over the island in Sweet Pea, our venerable 1986 M998. Good times! Nothing like driving at the ocean's edge without doors in a HMMWV...
