Fiberglass troop seats

I have ZERO bodywork experience, so be nice...

My fiberglass troop seats need some work. Overall the seats are in decent condition, but the fiberglass is a bit rough (surface cracks) in some areas and just handling the seats makes you itch like a mad man.

Can I just prime and paint them or should I do some kind of bondo work or something else to repair the surface first? The goal would be to make them itch free.

Thanks

Mikey

Does it have paint on it? If so LIGHTLY sand it with 280 grit. To keep it from getting everywhere I recommend doing it wet and with gloves. Then let it dry completely, It is important to get all the moisture out of the fiberglass. So set it out in the sun if possible. If it doesn't have paint then lightly sand with 320 grit so the sealer has something to bond to. They sell fiberglass sealer. It should be a clear 2 part you have to mix together. Walmart here sells a repair kit, not sure if yours does. But you can go to any body shop and they may sell some to you. Make sure you wear gloves when applying and are in a well ventalated area. Let it cure, If you have to add another coat for some reason lightly sand with like 320 grit then apply it again. normally it will be fully cured in 24hrs. then you can paint it and admire your masterpiece :)

To fill in any low spots in the fiberglass, they make this awesome fiberglass body filler material called "kitty hair". I love the stuff for body work, and should work good if you have some breaks or gouges in the troop seats. And then yes, you probably could just get some fiberglass resin and mix it up and brush it on, then when it cures, sand it smooth then paint and you will have a nice itch free surface. Guess it depends on how much work you want to put into it. But just painting over the rough fiberglass probably won't work very good.
