flame heater woes

Well after much work, i still can't get the flame heater to operate.

0. I bought Bjorn's flame heater detection kit. It works fine, even the smallest light shining on it triggers the lamp. (unfortunately the lampholder I used has an internal 37K resistor because it was used with a 120V neon lamp, so I will have to change that for it to work. duh.. so beware unidentified lampholders!)

But to the issues:

1. I am getting frustrated because at first the coil was bad, it would put out almost nothing. I replaced the coil. I found that the spark from the new coil is pretty good, makes about 1/4" of spark.

2. But when I hook it to the plug, there is no spark.

3. I removed the plug and left it connected to the coil, and grounded the case of the plug -nothing.

4. So I bought a few "pull-out" used plugs from TNJ murray. Same thing.

5. But when I disconnect the plug, the cable delivers a good spark.

6. Could I have bad 'used' plugs?

7. Is there a way to clean them? They are all looking like the things are fouled, black coatings on the insulator, etc. They can't all be bad, can they? -but nothing works!

I am desparate to see that flame heater indicator lamp illuminate!
