front diff ... open?

If the stock front diff on an M1009 is open, why does it seem to bind a bit when on dry pavement or in tight turns?

Is it binding when it is not in 4wd?
I had bad hubs that were locked in all of the time and would bind up in sharp turns on pavement. It took a new set of hubs to get me going right.
