Hello all! I was going through the parts from the 6.5l turbo motor I bought from salvage for my rebuild deciding what I was going to scrap and what I wanted to keep. I know many members have issues with our original fuel filter units, cracked housing bad O-rings, etc. I have been lucky enough to not be plagued with those issues and if/when the time comes, I had always been interested in the FM100 units since you can get heaters, water in fuel sensors, etc with them. Tonight, however, while going through my left overs I got to looking at the newer (1996) unit that came with my motor. I have included a cpl of pics below for those not fam. with them, but why would they not be a less expensive option for ppl wanting/needing to replace their original unit? I have not done any real looking into these housing, but am wondering of the wires are for a heater and water in fuel indicator? It has 3 ports labeled in, out, and drain. I am unsure as to how to purge the unit when you change the filter but am going to see what I can find on the newer trucks. The only thing I see that would take any real work would be fabricating a bracket for it.
Is there a reason these are not used that I have missed looking through posts here? If not Ill just hang on to it.
Thanks much!
Greg

That fuel filters is considered part of the fm stanadyne filters.. get a intake off a 6.5 or a van engines it mount on rear of intake the unit is usall PIA to service and filter cartage is expensive compared to canisters type.l

Southdave, I am familiar with its stock location, I was simply wondering if it was a viable alternative for the "box style" units that are stock on our trucks. I am happy with my stock unit and like I said have been lucky enough to not have many of the common problems other members have experienced. I was thinking if it already had a heater and water sensor, that it might be a less expensive, salvage yard replacement for those with a failed stock unit. I had not yet investigated the cost of replacing the filter unit vs the canister type many choose to go with. I was just saying if it is a viable replacement unit, that fabricating a mount seemed to be the hardest part of the retrofit, that and the wiring adaptation.
Again, just wondering if it is a quality unit, worth my hanging on to or should it just go in the scrap pile with alot of the other parts that I have no use for that were on the salvage yard motor I bought.

Thanks,
Greg

I've always had fair luck with the Stanadyne 80 box filter myself. With that said and with economy in mind, I'm switching all 3 of my CUCVs over to the FM100 for the exact same reason you specify, economy. GL nearly flooded the market a couple of years back with filters for the FM100. Gimpy was selling a base and 6 filters for stupid low money and even ebay has seen it's share of the filters. One guy here in FL selling 6 filters for $22 delivered. As far as that 6.5 filter, they work just fine and it might be economical for a person with just the one truck. Bleeding is done through a valve right at the top of the filter. Just price elements and do a cost analysis.
