My Gen 2 light was acting the same way however yesterday my newly acquired M1009 refused to start without a 24V charge. I took it to a alternator specialist who said the Gen 1 alternator was not putting out sufficient current to maintain battery voltage...he was able to get the Gen 1 unit to work by jumping the ignitor and suggested that I replace the Gen 1 alternator belt which appeared to be slipping.
