Pretty good write up for those of us looking to do an axle tear down for any reason.
Be it a complete overhaul of seals or gear replacement, such as this fellow with spring mount mods and no spins.

I would imagine few of our truck's have any wear in the differentials at all. They are built so god darn heavy duty and most GMC's never made it past 30,000 miles anyway. One of those things I don't think i'll have to worry about tearing into, ever.

As far as gear oil goes, I would recommend synthetic just as the write up did. Probably make them run a lot cooler, heck of a lot of close tolerance high load gear meshing going on with Hypoid differential's.

The only thing with synthetic oil is that sometimes when one makes the change over from old diansore guts oil the seals that didn't leak before the synthetic start to leak after because the synthetic is a little thinner than the old d-guts oil was. But now we have a great read on how to replace those seals if need be... :)
