Headlights acting wacky, need info

I am a new member here. 2 weeks ago I bought, a k30 cucv fo 5 thousand dollars it was running great. tonight I was leaving a restaurant. when I started up my diesel the head lights came on.

after driving 2-3 miles the lights. turned off. I did not touch the right black out switch. a cop pulled me over to tell me to turn on my lights. I pulled the right switch out then flipped it up still no head

lights. my volt meter was in the red. is my alternator not charging. or do I have bad batteries? is there a way I can pull out that black light crap. turn it into a civilian k30 truck without that military

lights crap. is there some fuse, or relay I can remove? ( do I need new alternators?

No need to chop up your wiring system if you take the time to learn how it works and what maintenance is required on a 30+ year old truck. The general rule for owning a CUCV is if it is rubber place it , if it is electrical clean it ( meaning cleaning all plugin connections and grounds ).

You already have posted this in another thread that Doghead split off into it's own thread , you should continue your posts on this issue in that thread.
Have you read any of the links I posted in that thread ?
Have you done any basic tests of your alternators ?
Have you cleaned any grounds or connections ?

Welcome to the hobby. I would look under the dash on the left side at the fuse block. I am sure you have a bad 30 amp fuse on the right side of the fuse box midway up. It is a common problem. It can be fixed easily without any real difficulty. Go under there and you will see the slightly melted fuse. the heat has unsprung/weakened the tension on the fuse and created a hot spot in the circuit. I used LED headlamps and tail lamps to relieve some of the amp draw on the circuit. That has worked well on a few trucks just by changing the headlamps to LED. There are other options. Some include adding another wiring harness for the headlamps. I have several CUCV's and never done that. IMHO it can be fixed by cleaning all the grounds and light sockets and getting the fuse to fuse block connection tight. Check that fuse out and do some cleaning and report back with your findings. I will do my best to assist you in getting the CUCV in top notch operating condition. Good Luck. Once again welcome to the CUCV hobby. This is a very easy fix and will require a minimum of time and tools. That is provided no one has hacked into the lighting electrical system. At this point I will assume it is NOT hacked up and is just the same common issue. I pictured the Truck lite LED headlamps above. Great upgrade and eliminated a hot fuse box on several of my CUCV's. NOT cheap. But I am not a fix it on the cheap type of guy.
