Greetings everyone! I've always dreamt of owning a Humvee and it's finally going to happen. Got myself an M1165 from GovPlanet, and waiting for the EUC now. I know it runs, but it looks a little rough, and not sure what all I'll have to do to fix her up. I've owned a few Jeep wranglers and Suzuki Samurais, and I'm familiar with fixing and maintaining those. This one is a whole new chapter for me. I was getting anxious about the limited details online, and that's when I stumbled on steel soldiers. I'm so glad to see all the support and experience on this forum. Looking forward to using the resources here to help me restore it!

Welcome to the Outfit!

You are starting a big adventure. Waiting on the EUC will seem like forever... Then when that gets approved the race is on. You will need to move it. I know it says that it runs - but you need to look it over carefully before you jump in and take off. I strongly suggest that you verify fluid levels in every gear box as well as everything under the hood. Parts aren't cheap but burning up a gear box because it was drained makes it feel so much worse.

BE SURE to inspect the tires. Cracks in the sidewall can let the tire fly off the rim pretty fast.

Also, while you are waiting on the paperwork maybe download the TM's for your truck. It might help you not burn up the startbox if you read starting instructions in the -10 Technical Manual.

Welcome Abram80. There are many HMMWV owners in NOVA. There is also a Nova HMMWV owners group on Facebook, if you are on that platform. There is, or was, a repair shop in Richmond that took in HMMWVs as well, if you are not up to all the wrenching.
Welcome again and please keep us posted on your progress. Hopefully there will be some meetups once the weather warms.

Thank you! I appreciate that info. I've been trying to learn as much watching YouTube for the last week or so :). I did download the TM just last night... was one of the first things I did after my login got activated!

Great point about the fluid levels... I'll be arranging for transport. I was planning to have the transporter roll it off the ramp when unloading on my drive way. And like you said, I wanted to check out the fluids and air box before trying to start.

If there are no major surprises after I get the truck, then I guess the first maintenance I plan on doing is to replace all fluids.

On that note, I was going through the transmission pics... I don't see a drain plug on mine... it looks sealed where that dimple is where the plug should be. I've seen other pics which have a drain bolt in that location, and some that don't have a hole/bolt. Anyone knows where the drain plug should be on this?

Never mind my question on the drain plug. I found out after additional searching that some of these models came with sealed drain pans.

If anyone has experience swapping these, please let me know if this is a moderately easy task, or if there are any quirks to this process which makes it a P
Get your PM done and then drive over to Syria, VA for the Labor Day Rally this fall.
Sounds good! Thank you

Your plan to change all the fluids is a sound one. Note that the Lube Order includes checking the portal hubs and several other "odd" places too, such as the differentials. A drain and fill of the differentials is fine, IMO, but you really should make the time to open the geared hubs and inspect them. A hub failure is VERY bad, and just the thought of it gives me the willies.
If you do open the hubs, you will need anaerobic sealant to replace the cover. Permatex makes one that is usually available at your local parts source (Advance, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.) You'll need it occasionally for other things.
Up to you whether to replace the trans pan for one with a drain plug. Changing the fluid shouldn't be that common of a task. I've had to change mine several times ---- along with the transmission! The current one seems to be holding up, thank goodness.
If you need parts, the VA HMMWV group is a good place to ask. One of the members buys a lot of trucks to get parts he wants, and sells the rest. I got my trans/TC from him. Happy to connect you.
Again, WELCOME!

Yup, I plan to do all the fluids as the first maintenance. Depending on how the transmission fluid looks, I may hold off on that for later. I know the truck is coming without batteries. I am probably going to just have the transporter roll it off the ramp, and then winch it on to my drive way using my Jeep's winch. I'll resist my urge to start it, until after I change engine oil. I may also drain and refill with new coolant. Probably before that I may just pressure wash the whole thing down... it filthy as it's missing half the doors.
At this point I'll install the batteries and try to crank her. If all is good, then the next order of maintenance would be the hubs and diffs. While at it, will check the spindle nut and the half shaft bolts.
I'll plan on driving the HMMWV only after the above mentioned maintenances done. In a way, the wait for the EUC is good.... gives me more time to review videos and explore the TMs. Plus, I started a restoration project of my 87 Suzuki Samurai back late last summer. Lots of rust damage, so half the body is off the frame. I reckon, I have at least 100-150 hours worth of work left to complete on it. Hadn't touched it since November for various reasons. I'm now motivated to wrap that one up before the Humvee arrives :).

Welcome from NOVA. This forum provides a lot of information. Mine rarely leaves the farm.

Is the Syria event a Steel Soldiers thing or ?
It's both. A joint venture of MV's and the VA Offroad Jeep group. Held at the Graves Mountain Lodge and hosted by Cabell Garbee (cgarbee on Steelsoldiers) who can get you the proper paperwork to attend.
