Help me out before I bid....

Hello,

I am looking at a few trucks right now in Kansas on GL, and I live in NJ.
I have a few questions about the general GL process.

1. Do I need to fill out those tax forms before I bid/win a truck? Do I need to fill out forms for both my home state and the state where the auction is located? The form for the NJ (If im looking at the right one, has stuff about a vendor...but since I'm not a vendor what do I do with this?)

Also, is the 10% tax that GL says is applicable a state (KS) tax or just a GL tax?

2. If I get this right, you bid with paypal or credit card, then if you win, you need to fill out their EUC, and the SF-97, then essentially wait until both of those are done, then I can call the site and schedule a shipping pick up date. Is this right? and will the SF-97/title be sent to me or given with truck?

3. Does $750 for the shipping from KS to NJ sound good?

Thanks,
Will

Very doubtful you will get shipping on a deuce or larger from Kansas to NJ for $750. It is usually $2-3 per mile. If you get it for $750, then please, by all means, let us all know.

You pretty much so have it right about the process. You will be charged to your credit card overnight the night you purchase, then fill out the EUC, and will not get a "paid in full invoice" until after the EUC clears. This means your money is tied up for weeks or months until you get the paid in full invoice, which is the real authorization for pickup.

You do not get a SF97 though. You have to apply for it, AFTER you pick up the truck. It is not free. Not everyone needs a title. In Georgia, for instance, they will not issue a title on any of the vehicles over 25 years old, so a SF97 is a complete waste of money for most of the M35A2 and many of the 5 tons, older than 1986. We transfer and sell those by bill of sale only, and most states realized we don't issue titles here, so with the bill of sale they issue one in your state if it is a requirment. Same goes for trailers, where trailers are not required to be insured when you get your registration and license plate. You should set up your insurance on your truck before you make an effort to pick it up. The 10% is a fee for the auctioneer, not a tax. Tax within the state is a different fee. If you are a businessman with a tax free status, you fill out the forms and dont't have to pay the state tax on the purchase, only on the sale, should you resell it.
I usually pay the tax, as I don't have a business license, nor do I want one. Just a hobby for me.
Good luck.

Looks like MWMules beat me to the punch.

They will charge you tax at your state's tax rate.

Looks like 1300 miles to haul the truck, 6 miles per gallon at 4 dollars a gallon would be about 866 dollars for fuel alone. $750 seems very optimistic.

The SF-97 cannot be completed until the EUC clears. It was 65 days for my EUC and another 70 days for my first SF-97. Rumor has it that the process is much faster now. Glen

GL gets the 10% for selling the item. You may be charged sales tax from the state the sale is in. You will need to pay nj sales tax when you title the truck in nj. You pay for the items within 24 hrs of winning.

You do not need to fill out any tax forms unless you are a business.

After you send in you info for your EUC it may take 6 weeks for the goverment to process it. After it is approved you then have 10 business days to pick up you truck. All locations have diffrent hours & days that they allow pick ups So you must pick up when they have a appointment avaliable. YOU DONT HAVE A 10 DAY WINDOW TO PICK UP AT YOUR DESIRE!!!

You apply for the SF-97 after you pick your truck. You will need to check the VIN Number before you apply.

I would double check the price of hauling the truck. That price sounds way low. What size truck are we talking about? You may be better off buying a truck local. I would expect shipping cost to be $1500-$2500

Glen, They always charge me for the state tax rate that the material is sold out of. My M105A2, and M35A3 I paid Kansas tax, and my M101A2's all had Oklahoma tax rate. Same with all the misc. things I buy, my ultrasonic rifle cleaner was Ohio tax rate.

Jay, All of my Kansas purchases had Kansas tax rates. When I bought my M1009 out of Missouri, I was taxed at the Kansas rate. When I bought my M35A2 out of South Dakota, I was not taxed at all.... until I hit the tag office, then Kansas got me.

Wow thanks for all the great responses!

I am not a business, just buying it for me...so I wont do those tax forms.

I will need a title, so once I receive the truck (if I were to get one), I would then contact GL for the SF-97, correct?

And I'm looking at CUCV's (you guys probably know which one's too hint - FT Riley KS), I was quoted that from a company for a 1986 Chevy k30/C30 so that's what they said for that. I' d call them to confirm before I did anything though, shipping wise.

So I will be charged NJ and KS tax on the truck? Will this be at the time of purchase or when I go to the NJ DMV?

Will

I don't know how your state does things but I live in TN and regularly buy items in AL. GL charges me AL sales tax which is a lower rate than TN. When I title the vehicle in TN I don't have to pay the total tax again but I do have to make up the difference in the AL and TN rates.

Buying a truck sight unseen that far away is kind of risky business for a newbie. You also have to make sure your shipper can make the 10 pickup window.

Would love it if all mine had been Missouri rate ! I could have done a mountain of paperwork to get the difference back, but way too much work and headache !

Just goes to show, you never know how G.L. is going to deal the cards !
Maybe the default setting for my account is "Bill the highest rate" !

Now you have me thinking I should look into this . . . . !
