Help trans hard shift and slipping

I was driving in the deuce today and i started to shift into 3rd when it was very hard and did not feel like it went in. it does drive in 3rd sometimes goes in easy other times not wanting to go fully in I get drive in no slipping well 2nd is slipping a little

anyone in the flint or mid Mich area can help with diag this issue in person?

the other thing when at a light "red " and i have the brake on and let out the clutch truck in neutral. When I goto first gear after pushing the clutch in the gears grind are a sec going in before even letup off the clutch.

1st and reverse are not syncro in the deuce transmission - so spinning it up in neutral, stepping on the clutch and trying to shift into 1st or reverse without allowing the transmission to spin-down causing it to grind would be considered normal from the perspective of the transmission - but it's bad for the operator to do so. Give it a couple seconds to spin down before shifting into these gears.

Clutch slipping is either worn out, wet from a leaking seal, or just real far out of adjustment. Your local high school auto shop would love to get the chance to diagnose and make an adjustment for you in the name of education.

I'm going to drain the trans check the oil ,
I do let it spin down 99% the time . I hope adjusting the clutch will help
3rd gear also makes a grinding sound when taking off after letting clutch out .
its like Grind ,,,, grind ,,,,, kinda like a syncro gear if you jamed it

wow. I have the same issue with mine. I don't know whether its a clutch or tranny issue but i've just been letting it spin down. Another thing i've been doing in when in neutral (rather than wait 2 or 3 seconds) i quickly put it in 3rd when at a complete stop and then put it in 1st. Seems to work like a charm and there's no grinding.

How does one adjust the clutch? I'm gonna kick myself if all I had to do this entire time was this!

what the heck I checked the trans oil looks ok . its full to first joint on finger .
truck runs like normal ? for a wile today 3rd is going in great but makes a grind after its in for like 1 sec every 5 -6 times its shifted up to ?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Are you saying that when shifting from 2nd to 3rd it goes right in, but makes a grinding sound after going in every half a dozen times or so?

Not going to be oil related. Syncro or possibly shifter related - or even the clutch not disengaging all the way, although if it were the clutch I'd expect this to happen in more gear positions - not just 3rd

With the added description of slipping, I would suspect your clutch facing is separating. That would explain the grinding as it never fully disengages and the slipping as chunks get between the disk and pressure plate or flywheel.

I agree, the third gear description is pretty hard to tell exactly what you are experiencing.

If you suspect synchro's, you can always try double clutching:

1) press in clutch
2) shift to neutral
3) release clutch
4) press in clutch
5) shift into gear
6) release clutch.

Double clutching will make sure the gears are spinning at the right speed before you attempt to enter a gear. It will work without any synchro's at all.

i think the sound you may be hearing is the clutch pads chattering on the flywheel. the clutch of this type should never be slipped. just in and out, do not slip it to start off or when shifting. shift to gear let clutch completely out and then apply power.

Hey, I thought these things were GI proof. ;-) Some clutch slipping is necessary when driving off road, especially with the low output of the multifuel (these don't have the 1200+ lb ft of torque at idle that a modern class 8 has). Unless of course you are talking about always dropping down to low on the transfer when starting. Thats probably not a bad idea, but I'm lazy.

Searched a lot, this seems like the best place.

When shifting in and out of 4 gear on the deuce, it wants to grind unless I double clutch or wait a long time with clutch in before shifting. All other gears shift OK.

Seems like this would be bad syncro. If so, is this something that can be replaced without pulling the transmission?

my truck as all the same problems. they never get any worse so I dont worry about it. If the trans shells out i can find one cheap. I did put a little more than a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer in the trans. and it did smooth the shifts some. you might try that.

now that i have taken the trans apart I dont know what good a oil additive can do
its just gears on gears , no automatic kinda stuff in there eg. clutch and steel packs that could benefit from lucas oil stuff.
if its not shifting right its some thing bogging on the syncro shaft or gear damage a very simple machine the trans , so simple its hard to put back in the truck..
