Help with lighting No lights at all m1008

Hi, New to the site. I have a 1986 m1008 and when I got the truck the blackout light switches were missing and someone on the right side plug cut the orange stripe and tied it to the solid orange wire and cut the white stripe and tied it to the solid white. everything else was left hanging. All the lights seemed to work but then driving down the road all of a sudden every light in the truck went dead. No H/L no running lights no T/s no 4 ways or int light. When I put the 4 ways on I could here the relay clicking very slowly but no light. Then when I got home and shut the truck off and was trying to figure it out they started working again. I figured well maybe the best place to start was getting a set of swtiches and putting the wiring back the way it was. Now I have nothing. I don't know where to start. Help.

OK I'm a retard with these so I need to start more basic. How do the switches work because I was reading another thread on M1008 lighting problem and I wasn't pulling the switch out...ouch...SO can anybody tell me excatly how the switches work and what they do ?
That would probably be the best place to start. BTW I got lights again. I had to pull the r/s switch out and lift it all the way up.

There is a complete explanation in the TM. If you don't have that manual, go to the top and click on the resource tab, scroll down to technical manuals then find TM 9-2320-289-10. Right click and save it to your computer. IIRC the right most switch needs to be pulled out and raised to operate the service lights. While there you may also want to download TM 9-2329-289-20. It has all of the wiring schematics in appendix F.

Thanks. I will do that. I wasn't sure what TM meant but I got it. Different forum, differnt acronyms.

OK Read the TM but am still a bit confused. Does anybody have a pic of what the plate that goes over the switches. Hard to tell which switch is which and the TM is not that clear. The marker plate is missing on mine.

Got me wondering why they were disconnected in the first place. Also the TM is a bit vague but if I'm reading it right when the truck is parked the switches should be in "off" position ?

Hey what's up.
I am in Stafford. I think I have them figured out. I played with them tonight in the dark.
Basically the right switch up is regular lights or "service Lights" Middle pos right switch, all lights dead. Right switch down now enables blackout mode to be used. Then pull left switch out and momentarily up and that turns on BO lights. put switch all the way down to shut them off. Some of them work. The grill one does and one front LED. That is what I got so far.

BTW The lights did not cut out so hopefully wiring them back to original fixed what ever made them cut out.

keep service lights on for head lights the rest of the switches is for black outs. i did the same thing when i got mine. did you buy the one from torrington? im live in clinton

No this one was owned by the Manchester Police dept. it spend the last 20 yrs puling the D.A.R.E trailer and driving the cop to the range. it's in exceptionally good condition . I paid 1600$ for it at sealed bid auction. It drives nice . I have been using it since my Dodge died.

Still can't find a short and it does it so randomly that it's hard to chase down. can the circut boards be bought new ? I'm thinking maybe I should change that and see what happens ? I bought a set of KC's to put on the grill guard as backup. No fun driving home at night and the truck blacks out. BTW buddys of mine who are ex mil give me different reasons for the blackouts. One guy said they provide enough light for night vision another said no they provide enough light for someone to walk infront of the truck and guide the driver in combat ?????
Be easy on me, I'm not ex mil.

yes, the blackout will give just enough light to let you see a shadow pass in front of you. i think it's like 3 to5 feet. of course it's only for driving like 5 miles an hour, so you can stop quick.

Hey Ace PM me if you want to look at my truck. I am about 5 minutes from Stafford.
Stafford Connecticut ?? I may take you up on that. I gotta figure out which starter I have. was BS'in with one of the mechanics at fleet maint and he said he "thinks" they might have stuck a 12v starter in the truck. Truck is still 24v. I know it turns over really really good but I hope that's not why....I drove for 1hr last night, no problems. It's because I put the KC's on it. Now the normal lights will work fine that I have backup lighting.
