Winch works, have new cable.

PRACTICALLY speaking, has anyone else figured out how to get five HUNDRED pounds tension on the end of the cable while reeling it in as per instructions?

I printed out relevant sections of TM 9-2320-280-20-3 (10-110.1) today and didnt' see any specific recommendations, just to use a minimum of 500 lbs. This parrots the Milemarker installation instructions which also says to USE 500 lbs, but not how.

I'm thinking MAYBE I could use a snatchblock around a tree and drag about 200 lbs of lead (I do some handloading, boolit casting) in a box (in an area I won't mind digging a rut) or even out into the street (asphault vs. wood coefficient of friction I imagine would be pretty high) with a 2:1 drag this would effectively double the "weight" but the resistance/friction isn't that exact.

When I had my son reeling in the winch a couple days ago I was leaning against the direction of pull - tug-o-war style - and the cable didn't exactly line up right (I'm only 160lbs).

No convenient cliff to hang my daughter's Matrix from. Thought about towing her car up the street (we live on a cul-de-sac about 100 yds long) while she rests her foot on the brake, but that winch is SLOW.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance.

piece of plywood with 3 people on it?
garbage can full of water?

wouldn'y pulling 200# with a snatch block be the same as pulling 100# straight? not 400#? as in, the more times around the wheels, the easier it is to pull...

D'oh, yeah, it WOULD halve it. It's late, up since 4AM. Time to go home.

Dragging people, other stuff, I'll give it more thought.

Hook your HMMWV to something. Winch yourself to said something while applying brake pressure and call it a day.
Also pick up a copy of the military TM for Vehicle Recovery/Rigging, lots of great info.

Place your vehicle on the low side of a 5% or less grade, attach the cable to a tree or a post or a fire plug and put the vehicle in neutral and activate the winch.
