Holy cow an air cooled engine. I can't even begin to imagine how well that would have worked out...
The Deutz is only partially air cooled, those no doubt are oil coolers on top which provides a substantial amount of the engines cooling.
I have a 75HP Deutz turbo diesel in my little skid loader and even a casual inspection reveals why it has such a huge oil cooler as there is actually not much in the way of cooling fins etc.

I stand corrected, one of the prototypes I saw was the Chrysler, not a GM try at it.

The Teledyne was the other one I saw in person.

Notice how the steering box is where it ought to be, rather than where it wound up in the later design.
