How do you convert the 11 digit VIN to 17 ? on FMTV

How do I get a Stewart and Stevenson LMTV converted from an 11 digit to a 17 digit VIN for insurance and registration?

You don't. There are processes at any competent insurance agency and moderately competent DMV. It is what it is. They can't change it to fit their needs
Wonder if anyone on this site from TN has experience with this issue.

Thousands of collector cars have non-17 digit vins. The dmv has ways to force the software to accept it.

I have progressive insurance and the broker had to manually override the 17 digit VIN requirement by adding a string of 1's to the end of my VIN, bringing the total to 17. Vehicles before 1983 have a 13 digit VIN. 17 digit VIN allows for one VIN to be good for 30 yrs, then it repeats.

As far as MVA/DMV, they issue paperwork with the VIN as stamped in the vehicle. They may add 1's to the end in the computer, but it isn't printed on the title or registration, or that is the scenario in MD. Practices are similar amongst states, following the Federal government guidelines.

Did you have an issue with the DMV in your state? If so, try a new clerk at the DMv or the supervisor or an off-site 3rd party tag and title company. If you haven't had any issues, no need in worrying about what might have been. My $0.02

I believe they added zeros before my truck's VIN to fill in the spaces. I've had more trouble buying and titling a used Hyundai Sonata for my 15 year old son than I did with the M-1078.

You may may want to try the main DMV office downtown Nashville. They were very helpful.

I called the MVA in Glen Burnie about this, spoke with a specialist and she said just file the title as it read. SIX digits. Never even had to get it inspected under historic use (I can always upgrade when I finally get the backup lights wired in if I lose my mind or win the lottery, it's like another $100 a year).

I went through a local tag agency, they typed up papers, took 'em to Glen Burnie, MD MVA, got tags/registration back in four days. Title in about two weeks.

What's on the title? A SIX digit registration number. It was what was on the original Montana title. Machine came out of Ft. Lewis, WA where it was refurbished in late 2006. I bought it in late September.

I didn't have to spend a minute in line at the MVA. Worth every penny at the agency.

Oh, and I insured through GEICO. Did both my '15 Tacoma and the humvee and saved $600 on the cost of insuring only the Tacoma through USAA. Same coverages, too. They didn't have a second of heartache over the six digits, either.

DMV in Carson City Nevada (Headquarters) had no problem with the short VIN. They freaked out when I told them that the MSRP was $106,000 or thereabouts. After two consultations, I had it registered at the lowest amount they have on the chart, so it was pretty cheap.

I bought my M1081 & thanks to Jwade here, got my Florida title. I took the Florida title to the local DMV & got it transferred into my name with no problems, but they did fine me for taking over 30 days(another story for another day). They did warn me not to change the paint scheme from as it came out of the military to a civy or business vehicle because Florida views this action as verboten & will pull your public road title & allow only a off road title.:cookoo:

Adding digits in front of the SN to make a 17 digit VIN creates a mismatch. When pulled over and you show a POI with a 17 digit VIN and the truck only has a 6 digit SN it can result in a ticket for no insurance - rationale is that you have insurance on a different vehicle with a different VIN that just happens to match the last 6 of your vehicle.

Your insurance company may try to wiggle out of covering an accident as well. "This isn't the vehicle we insured. The one we insured has a 17 digit VIN."

Also, in states where insurance is automatically reported to DMV , the VIN won't match and your plates will be automatically canceled. The first you'll know about it is when you get pulled over.

So judging by what 98G says then stands to say one must make sure that their insurance company and the vehicle registrars use the exact same method of adding digits so the vehicle registration and the insurance match. Would be smart also to get a Notarized letter while at registrars office (there usually is a notary on staff there) that shows that the title is less digits than vehicle registration and it was done by registrar office during vehicle data input as a standard procedure for dealing with computer system defaults that require 17 digits in the state's computerized registration system.
