How hot should glow plugs get, and a theorectical ether system?

Wondering how hot the glow plugs should get. I decided to check to see if I was getting juice to a random glow plug wire, so I took a wire off one of the existing glow plugs that I believe are all bad. I connected that wire to a new glow plug and held the threads to ground then had my wife turn the switch to run. I could feel a little heat(not touching it) but didn't get red hot like I envisioned, as in red.

On another note, if i had a quick start solenoid and ether canister and plumbed a line to the intake, disconnected the wires from the glow plugs would that be okay to use as a starting system for the 6.2?

Ether does not work very well in an indirect injection motor.

It is much more effective with direct injection motors.

No, is the simple answer.

Why not fix your GP system?

Found on the interwebs...

One of the disadvantages of an indirect injection diesel motor,

  • Because the heat and pressure of combustion is applied to one specific point on the piston as it exits the precombustion chamber or swirl chamber, such engines are less suited to high specific power outputs (such as turbocharging or tuning) than direct injection diesels. The increased temperature and pressure on one part of the piston crown causes uneven expansion which can lead to cracking, distortion or other damage due to improper use; use of " starting fluid" (ether) is not recommended in glow plug, indirect injection systems, because explosive knock can occur, causing engine damage.

Thanks Doghead, I was just supposing. I have new glow plugs and I think the system is working as the wait light was coming on for about 5-7 seconds. My batteries are low again, I recovered the hawkers that were in it, but left it sitting for about a week and they're much weaker now.
