I repacked the bearings in my rear axle yesterday and took the truck for a spin this afternoon. Drove it for about 30 minutes at 50 mph. When I stopped I immediately checked the hubs. I could hold my hand on them only for about 4 to 5 seconds--you think they are too tight? Should I back the hub nut out some or is it probably okay?

They are probably worn in enuf by now.. Are you sure the heat is not from the brakes dragging...?? Jack it up and see if they spin free..... Bearings are finiky... I always try to err on the loose side after they are set in I back off a flat or so, and check for a barely perceptible rocking of the unit. But every mechanic has his own method and the best teacher is experience... Run it again at lower speeds and see if you get the same heating.

I had the same problem but it was the out side seal that was to long, wide, big. There is a posting on it but cant seem to find it now. ( of course when you are looking for something to show )
