I don't know if this is the right place on the forum for this, but I've seen several guys mention using the laser thermometer from Harbor Freight to check hub temps after axle seal / bearing work. I got this coupon in an email and thought I'd pass it on for anyone needing one of these. Looks like the coupon expires on 12-20-09

They are also handy in the kitchen, measuring the temp of griddles and pans. Also seem to measure the temp of oil in a pan.

Well, the laser is just a pointer. It's actually a non-contact IR thermometer. They are accurate and very handy to have around. Great for hubs and tires (a low tire will read hotter than a fully inflated one), and you don't even have to touch the target!

Super handy...for that price there should be one in every toolbox.

I bought one from HF and it is a must carry in the truck. One time a hundred miles from home I stopped for a safety check and found one front hub at 145 deg. The others were around 100.

In 50 miles the temp on that hub got up to 245 deg. Without the IR thermometer I wouldn't have known that, just burned my hand.

BTW, when checking hub temp with your hand, use the back of it

Oh, stopped and ran water on the hub to cool it down, then drove slow the rest of the way home.
