Hydraulic pump needs

Does anyone know what pressure and flow rates an m998 would like to have for the hydraulic system? I’m selecting the pump on my engine swap and interested in any input people have on that subject. No plans for hydraulic winches but maybe later if it’s appealing.

is the stock pump adequate? Seems the manual says it should have “at least” 1300 psi. But as I understand it more isn’t always better.

Does the stock pump do anything that any basic vane pump doesn’t? Besides integrated reservoir that is.

Pumps are generally 2000psi. GPm in the 9 to 15 range is ok for a winch. Slow but it will still pull. You can get a belt driven pump from northern tool to mount on your engine. Or the front pump off an Flu419 SEE is 9gpm.

So how does the extra flow get handled on a higher flow pump that winches require? I’m reading that too much flow or pressure and you end up driving with the brakes on.

I would leave your stock steering pump alone and add a aux hydraulic pump for a winch if you wanted to go that route In the future. Otherwise the stock steering pump is fine.

Just add a belt driven pump and fan it to work on an AC bracket if you aren't running AC.

well I’ve read mention that the stock pump was not adequate or barely so. But I’d use it if it’s a decent way to go. I’m all about KISS. But I do want to entertain the idea of AC so I’m leaving that pump and bracket alone for now.
I’m swapping to a Cummins 12v and they have various gear drive pto options. If the hmmwv can fit on one of them then that’s a great way to go, but it may be wrong rotation, or too bulky to fit next to the block. I haven’t inspected that yet. Someone thought that the hmmwv pump might be a Saginaw pattern which may help in determining the applicability of them to the gear adapter.

hmm Anyone know off hand what direction their stock pump spins? I suppose that could be a factor as well.

I believe the Cummins will spin it clockwise facing the shaft.
