Is a 96 6.5 turbo a good candidate for rebuild?

Hello, after looking around at the various options, I have decided my best option for replacing my current 6.5 is to build my own. There is just to much varied thoughts and experiences on the places that rebuild except Kennedy and Peninsular and I just cant afford their work. I can rebuild one with forged internals and all top quality parts for about half the price of even Jasper. A local salvage yard has a couple of 6.5 turbo running pull outs for $1k. I would used my current 6.5 heads as they are new with only 12k miles or so on them. I would basically be buying the pull out for the block and turbo parts and a few of the other parts, they have the bracket for the kick down for a 700r4 which I want to swap in eventually and such. I would keep my current DB2 pump and such, injectors were new with the heads.
From what I have read, it seems a 96 would not be a bad choice, the 97 and up have the "improved" oil passages which as I understand it weaken the block and can cause oil starvation issues. Am I missing anything? Is there a weakness is the 96 motors I have not read about? As I understand it my current 6.5l heads will work with the turbo, just the exhause manifolds and such need to be swapped.
Thanks for your input!

Greg
