Why is it so hard to find a set of LED GM square replacement headlights...?
For a 1028- 1009- 1008.

I have looked at many links that all go to a dead end. Oddball spoiled me by putting a pair on his 109 and I am hooked. I have driven the 109 at night for many hours and the difference is amazing.

Have you looked at any of the H3 bulb setups for regular chevy civy trucks. LMC, JC Whitneys, even your favorite big box auto parts stores should beable to get them.
Haven't seen LED lights, but the H3 style bulbs are really bright

Just a thought

Don, I hope this link works. It is a replacement instead of the Projector types I found (which claim to be off road only), and s'pose to be much brighter and have glass lens instead of plastic. These seem pricey. ($50 for the kit) Hope this helps.I need to upgrade Butterbean's eyes too and Santa's got lights on his list. Let us know if you find a better deal or better lights. Thanks!

I bought those on ebay... they are ok but they make one with a hid kit which will be way brighter then these or the stock set up.

Have you ever looked into the higher-end sealed beams? I have mid-grade Silvania's. They are halogen and cost me $17/each. They are WAYY brighter than my old halogen sealed beams (which cost me $12/each). I've been told the higher end ones - "silverstars" (or something like that) by silvania are much better than mine. They're halogens too, and about $40/bulb here. And they don't last as long as mine. But hey, beats $600/bulb :p

guys please don't stick HID's in non projector aka reflective halogen headlight housings. For one it is very illegal and two it's really annoying to other drivers.

Fire is right - You need HID housings. Also, half the HID set-ups I've seen have only one "bulb" and therefore only one setting (they are a low beam or high beam, not both) which is rather dumb if you drive on the highway but don't want to blind the whole town & get a ticket..

pricey for sure but look cool less draw and will work with both 12/24v
If I'm reading that correctly it's $600 per lamp, sold individually.
So $1200 for a set.

The price of LED's is just insane these days, don't believe what they say about 'production costs', while there is a grain of truth there is also a huge mark-up.

I picked up a set of sealed replacement HID light for my mothers truck about 5 years or so ago. They where HID low beams with a second halogen bulb for high beams. I decided to stay away from the moving parts style with the shade that would rotate around the bulb for high beams.
Payed about $400 for them and they worked flawlessly for years until she traded the truck in for a newer one (without swapping the stock lamps back in first). The same kit today carries an $800 price tag.

The silverstars are nice but simply can't compare to an HID.
I have yet to see any LED headlights installed. I keep thinking man, if I had $1200 burning a hole there's a long list of junk before I could bring myself to dish that for headlamps.

The issue with LED bulbs is the heat dissapation, which makes me think those small sealed units are so expensive because only the best, most pure diodes can be used. And since the military is buying them....markup heaven!

The diodes and drivers (that make them real bright) and the heatsinks can be found at dealextreme.com or ebay. They're all made in china but I'm sure the $600 ones are too.

I'm curious several of those could be thrown together on a square aluminum heat sink to fit into the GM style holes. It could probably be done for $100(if you can find a good heatsink in a junk pile) or so but wouldn't be nearly as tacti-cool.

Just a note on silverstars and the like:

They are just set in the factory to burn brighter at the expense of bulb life. Not a big deal for the price but its the same thing that would happen if you turned up the voltage on a normal set.

I once had an awesome link to a writeup about all this stuff from a guy that designed the HID housings for visteon or one of the other OEM suppliers but I can't find it. But the gist is what was already mentioned - the HID bulbs really only work if they're put in a housing designed for them. The light source of the HID is geometrically different than that of a halogen so the light doesn't reflect properly. You really need a purpose built reflector if you don't want to be like those kids at the mall.

I found this site when researching a motorcycle project: The Retrofit Source online: headlight upgrades for all applications

Not as easy as a straight drop-in replacement but adds to the unique-factor.
