Jumpstarted Deuce only to find no/low oil pressure.

Today I was sick (cough cough) from work for the morning to try and get caught up on some things. One being driving next door to check out some the vehicles I am thinking of bidding on. Anyways the winch truck had dead batteries, so I jumped off my CUCV to get her running. I did the usual hydrolock checks and such, and then started her up. She made the worst whoop whoop whoop noise while running, and was shooting junk out the stack. After about 20-30 seconds of this I noticed that there was no oil pressure, so I shut her down fast. While looking a round to see if anyone one was around that saw me start this to blame me for destroying it. I did not see anyone so I checked the dipstick again, and it was low but ok. I cranked her up again, and I finally got oil pressure. The oil pressure just barely got past 10psi though. This just goes to remind me you never know about some of this stuff unless you check it out, and even then be watchful.

If anyone needs any info on the trucks at Richmond I can help you from my notes. I will help with the ones I am not bidding on. The pictures there are good, but they did not bother to mention important things missing.

So you can just go up and try to start these things? Aren't you escorted around?
It depends on the location. I would tend not to buy from locations where they don't allow you to check vehicles out in entirety. My money is too important to me to drag one of these home only to find out it is junk unless I am buying a parts vehicle that is.

My favorite from today the swan of vehicles at this location in terms of paint and body. I went to start it and nothing happened. Then I looked under the truck to find things missing that are kind of important. I am sure it will go high though because GL did not mention the problems. In talking to the GL guy he was went off and started to talk about how great this and another vehicle ran. I mentioned the missing parts and that there was no way it started, he just deflated. This is a new guy, and I am getting the impression that he is trying to boost sales anyway he can. They are currently selling a set of used bar stools one at a time instead of as a group.

Chambersburg lets you walk arround unescorted, and they didnt care that I took my deuce for a 20 minute spin around the yard. Only thing the guy said to me was "dont run it out of fuel" I heard at Mechanicsburg, they dont let you start them.

I kind of hedged my bet on Mechanicsburg and wore my uniform to pick up a lot while M38in Maine was waiting for his EUC and had asked me to check his truck. I got a kind of carte blanch to walk around and found his truck and was able to do a pretty good check of it including starting it and checking lights and such. I do think they would have stopped me if I was not in uniform.

I picked up a few of those gray Army running shirts just for this purpose at questionable locations. Also driving something green when checking vehicles out usually puts people at ease.

This is the truck I was referring to when I brought this up. I am amazed at the closing price of $1915. I feel sorry for the winner, but maybe it be ok.

I thought I was clear enough as it was the only winch truck at that location for sale. This does raise the question of actually how many people outside of our group watch our site for info.

Ya never know! I would for sure buy one of those, but now I am leery of GL, since I buy everything online and never having seen the vehicle

J2H the basic rule with GL is you should ALWAYS inspect before bidding. Getting someone else to check your stuff out usually works too.

I know, CS told me about that yesterday. I might have to get my wife's CUCV from GL, but if its near SC or NC I can snag an experienced SS member to go with to check it out
